1. The Essence of Great Life Coaching
Probably the biggest misunderstanding amongst the general public is this:
They believe that a life coach will “tell them what to do”.
The fear of being directed and bullied holds people back from what I believe would be the best decision of their life. To take on a partner in success. A great life coach will share specialist knowledge, yes. But they certainly won’t prescribe and offer tons of advice. Their job is to coax the greatness out of the client. To ask wonderful questions. To share inspirational stories and ideas. To brainstorm, to support, to challenge, to elevate.
2. Embracing Yourself As An Expert
Most people are reluctant to let themselves shine. Think about the people you’ve trusted to help you in your life. A close friend…an inspirational teacher…someone in a book or on TV who’s changed your life in some way…
My guess is that on each occasion, there was something very special about that person. Something specific that made them stand out for you. When you can take your experiences, your passions, your stories, however mundane they may seem to you—to others they can make an enormous difference.

3. Authentic Communication
One of the keys to great life coaching is the ability to communicate as yourself. It is the perfect way to demonstrate to your client that it’s perfectly ok for them to be themselves.
Another critical skill is being able to challenge your client appropriately. This doesn’t mean making them wrong…It doesn’t mean confronting or criticising.
It simply means communicating in a way that allows the other person to break unhelpful patterns. It allows them to remove the blinkers and to explore powerful possibilities for change and growth.
4. Lighting up the room with enthusiasm and a sense of possibility
Another misconception about life coaches is that they force themselves to be positive. Nothing can be further from the truth. There is no one fixed personality of a life coach. I’ve known great coaches who were: funny, deeply serious, analytical, optimistic, even grumpy!
But they had something in common. They each were perfect for their clients. They were able to combine their own authentic energy with a belief in possibilities, abundance and growth. And they combined their unique energy with the ability to nurture create possibilities and opportunities for those they worked with.
5. Be willing to break the rules in order to find breakthrough solutions
A great coach will always work at a high standard of professionalism. She or he will always strive for their clients’ best results in an ethical manner. But at the same time, they have no fear of bending the rules. Of looking for unique and novel solutions. They are not scared to help their client think out of the box and break free of the current paradigm.
6. Always embrace a sense of playfulness
When people are creating positive change in their lives, it can be scary. It can be confronting. The last thing those people want from a life coach is “serious, serious, serious”
The topic may be heavy. The implications could be huge for your client. But any journey is a lot more enjoyable when it becomes an adventure. Fun, mischief, playfulness, are always a part of a great coach’s toolkit.
7. Never acknowledge the concept of failure
The most tenacious and determined person in the world can run into serious challenges. Not least the pattern of repeating mistakes again and again. A great life coach believes there is no such thing as failure. But they also acknowledge that doing the same thing again and again (when it clearly isn’t working) must be addressed.
8. Be in love with the life coaching process and with the concept of continual improvement
You can only coach somebody to the level that you believe is possible for them. This is why the philosophy of abundance is SO important to a life coach. There can always be more we can create. There can always be more we can grow. More of everything is ALWAYS possible. These are the beliefs of a great life coach.
9. Become addicted to adding value for others and in your own life
A great life coach never accepts mediocre results and experiences. Not for their clients. Not for themselves. The conclusion of one journey always leads to the start of a new one. A hunger for life and for living is essential to becoming one of the top 1% of life coaches.
10. Create a beautiful vision for a great life and help others do the same
Life Coaches become seen as leaders. Not because they tell people what to do but because they inspire them to create amazing breakthroughs. A life coach has an irresistible and incredible vision for their own life. They inspire their clients to build remarkable visions and “impossible” realities for themselves too.
11. Help others to enjoy the bliss of living in the moment
A great life coach is sensitive to the pain and hurt that others sometimes feel. She or he is sensitive that people often struggle when their energy is constantly rooted in the past or the future. As a life coach you’ll be able to help your clients celebrate the present and to attract an amazing life from that standpoint.
I hope this article has fully explained your test results. I even more dearly hope it has spurred you towards considering becoming an amazing life coach yourself.
